Indy Invitations in the Mail
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Entry invitations have been mailed to race teams that are expected to compete in this year’s Indianapolis 500.
The entry deadline is midnight April 9, a day after testing begins in the annual Rookie Orientation Program at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Expected entrants include 1998 Indy winner Eddie Cheever, who leads the Indy Racing League standings this season after winning the opener Jan. 24 at Orlando, Fla., and two-time Indy winner Arie Luyendyk, who has announced plans to retire after the May 30 race.
Among the other expected entrants are defending IRL champion Kenny Brack, 1996 Indy winner Buddy Lazier, 1998 IRL rookie of the year Robby Unser and 1996 IRL co-champions Buzz Calkins and Scott Sharp.
The rookie tests will be held April 8-9, followed by two days of open testing for veterans and then private tire tests conducted by Goodyear on April 12.
The track will open for full practice on May 15.
