Man Survives After Parachute Fails

December 15, 1997

LINCOLN, England (AP) _ Bren Jones plummeted 3,500 feet to the ground when his parachute didn’t open _ and managed to walk away with only stomach pains.

Experts said his fall was slowed by another jumper who became entangled with him for a while _ and his landing was eased by a soft, muddy field in northeast England.

Jones, 56, jumped Sunday from a plane that took off from a private airstrip at Hibaldstow in Lincolnshire county, a police spokesman said Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

After the accident, an air ambulance took Jones to Lincoln Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was sore but sitting up in bed Monday.

``(He) kept his nerve in a very trying situation. He is a highly experienced jumper,″ John Hitchen of the British Parachute Association said.
