South Bend mayor returning home from Afghanistan
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The mayor of South Bend is on his way back home from a military deployment to Afghanistan that began nearly seven months ago.
South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO’-tah-juhj) posted photos to Facebook Tuesday showing the interior of a plane packed with military personnel. Spokeswoman Kara Kelly tells the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1qKWJUJ ) the exact date of the mayor’s return isn’t known, but he is expected back at City Hall in early October.
Joseph Buttigieg says he received a message from his son Tuesday saying that he had left Afghanistan, although the timing of his arrival in the United States wasn’t clear.
The 32-year-old Democrat was elected mayor in 2011. He is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and served as an intelligence officer during his deployment.
