FLORENCE, S.C. – During the Memorial Day ceremony at the Florence National Cemetery, Sen. Hugh K. Leatherman presented a $10,000 check for the Gold Star Families Monument.

“It’s a beautiful monument,” Leatherman said. “I’ve seen the markup of it, and I’m excited about it.”

The monument will be constructed at the northern entrance of the Florence Veterans Park to pay tribute to Florence County’s Gold Star Families, said Eddie Collins, a member of the Gold Star Families Memorial Committee.

Gold Star Families are those who have lost a family member who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The donation was a contribution from the state of South Carolina, Leatherman said.

“Well, it means so much to our area and our veterans, and we just can’t honor those who gave so much – too much,” Leatherman said. “We don’t get to do this often enough, and I want to make sure they remember it.”

The monument will cost $50,000 to purchase and install. With the $10,000 donation, the committee now has $35,000 and only $15,000 left to raise.

“It [the donation] makes my job easier,” Collins said. “Our goal was $50,000, and that’s what it’s going to cost us. ... We’ve got now a minimum of $35,000. We’ve got $15,000 to go. That looks easier than $50,000 or $30,000 – a lot easier.”

The monument will be finished on Nov. 11 – Veteran’s Day – this year, Collins said.
