CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Officials say a bridge at the marooned Crossings Mall could reopen soon.

Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper says the opening could happen by the end of the week. Kanawha planning director Steve Neddo said Tuesday that contractor David Alvarez told him that he's planning to have the bridge open to the public by July 31 or Aug. 1.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the Elkview-area mall has been closed since last year's June flood washed out the culvert bridge. The bridge was the only access point to the shopping center.

Neddo says while work continues on the bridge, some employees have been allowed to cross.

Officials say the bridge is not finished and people should avoid crossing it until work is completed.
