Guards Face Inmate Attack Charges
HAWTHORNE, N.Y. (AP) _ Four veteran jail guards were arrested Wednesday and charged with sexually attacking female inmates.
``These acts are acts of intimidation, degradation, humiliation and serious abuse,″ District Attorney Jeanine Pirro said of the alleged activities at the Westchester County Jail.
The charges include rape, sodomy, sexual abuse and official misconduct.
County Executive Andrew Spano said he was immediately banning male officers from the 10 posts inside the women prisoners’ living quarters. Any men currently assigned there will be transferred to other positions at the jail.
``These things are happening too often at the women’s facility,″ he said.
The investigation began last year when an inmate complained about one of the guards, and her boyfriend wrote to authorities soon after. Investigators ``came across information that seemed to indicate this was widespread,″ Spano said.
Each of the guards was released on $300,000 bail. The guards have between nine and 12 years on the job.
The men were suspended with pay, but the pay will end within two days, Correction Commissioner Rocco Pozzi said.
