Jeweler Shot Outside Hotel

February 2, 1996

NEW YORK (AP) _ The pavement outside a midtown Manhattan hotel was smeared with blood after three armed robbers shot a Hong Kong jeweler and fled with about $1 million worth of diamonds, police said.

Lap Koon Chow, 36, was in critical but stable condition early today with a bullet wound to the chest, said Detective Mark Patterson, a police spokesman.

Lap was shot Thursday night outside the hotel as he and another Hong Kong businessman were returning from showing the gems to a prospective client, police Capt. William Roe said.

The robbers, who wore knit caps pulled down over their eyes, grabbed two suitcases containing the diamonds and fired a single shot at the jeweler, police said.

The other businessman chased the gunmen, who fired two more shots before ducking into a dark-colored sedan, Roe said.

One shell casing was found near the hotel entrance and two more on the street. Police were trying to enhance the videotape from a hotel security camera that was taping at the time.

The jewelers were in New York for a show this weekend.
