News Summary: Chinese allege Glaxo bribe campaign

July 11, 2013

BRIBERY ACCUSATIONS: China’s police ministry accused executives of pharmaceutical supplier GlaxoSmithKline PLC of conducting a longstanding campaign of paying large bribes laundered through travel agencies to doctors, hospitals and others to increase drug revenues.

FEW DETAILS: The ministry identified the employees only as “high officials” of Britain-based GSK and gave no details of the size of payments or who received them.

MIXED MESSAGING: Glaxo will cooperate with authorities, but said the announcement was the first official communication it received about the investigation, even though Chinese officials said the suspects confessed. GlaxoSmithKline in June investigated an accusation that its salespeople in China bribed doctors and found no evidence of wrongdoing.
