Thai Convicted Of Murdering Man Over Foot Insult
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ An entertainer from Thailand has been convicted of murdering a Laotian who made a gesture considered a grievous insult in Southeast Asia - showing him the sole of his foot.
Pongsak ″Torr″ Trakulrat, 38, was convicted last week in Los Angeles Superior Court of second-degree murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the slaying of Korakanh Piousourinha, authorities said Friday.
Trakulrat was singing in an after-hours Thai cabaret in March 1985 when Piousourinha, 29, a patron, put his foot on a chair with the sole directed at Trakulrat, witnesses said.
When the cabaret closed, Trakulrat followed the man outside and shot him.
Trakulrat faces a maximum penalty of 31 years to life in jail, said Deputy District Attorney David Dahle. Sentencing is set for March 28.
