Cleveland woman’s car stolen at gunpoint as she rented Redbox movie outside Walgreens

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Cleveland man is accused of carjacking a woman at gunpoint outside a Walgreens in the city’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood.

Kwaimane Johnson, 18, is charged with aggravated robbery in the Wednesday carjacking on Broadway Avenue near East 65th Street, according to court records.

Johnson is accused of being one of two men who stole a 59-year-old woman’s car about 11:15 p.m. outside the Walgreens, according to a police report.

Investigators are still trying to identify the second man, the police report says.

The men pointed a gun at the woman as she rented a movie from Redbox. They took her car keys and drove away in her black 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, the report says.

Several police officers spotted the car early Thursday at a gas station on Kinsman Road at East 139th Street. Two men were inside it.

Both men got out of the car and ran away when they saw the police officers. The man in the driver’s seat ran to East 138th Street near Union Avenue before the officers lost sight of him, the report says.

The officers cornered the passenger, later identified as Johnson, behind a dumpster in the gas station’s parking lot and took him into custody without incident.

Officers found a black handgun in Johnson’s hooded sweatshirt and a digital scale in his underwear, the police report says. They also found a small bag of suspected marijuana in a cup holder in the car.

Johnson waived his right to a preliminary hearing during his arraignment Saturday in Cleveland Municipal Court. The case was bound over to a Cuyahoga County grand jury, court records say.

He remains in custody on $75,000 bond, court records say.
