This Valentine’s a Real Animal

February 13, 1998

NEW YORK (AP) _ If you haven’t found a main squeeze for Valentine’s Day, there are plenty of alternative-style companions just panting for your company.

``Cute young male into being treated like a dog seeks companion who’ll walk him with a leash and collar,″ says the ``personal ad″ displayed on subway cars.

If you haven’t guessed, the intentionally naughty-sounding invitation is courtesy of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The poster-boy is a single white male (no age, occupation or hobbies given.) He sits politely, with one ear flopping down and one perched upright.

Got a fluffy feline in mind? ``Desirable young female into heavy petting seeks companion into same.″

``Relationships are very important,″ says Randy Taylor of the Bleecker & Sullivan agency. ``If you can’t find a Valentine, you might find a cute, cuddly pet.″

``Animals,″ he added, ``should be treated as companions.″
