Agency promises progress on Montana waste site
MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — The new regional head of the Environmental Protection Agency has pledged to make progress on the cleanup of a Montana industrial site.
The Missoulian reported Wednesday that Greg Sopkin aims to have a draft environmental assessment ready next year on the Smurfit-Stone site near Frenchtown.
The agency says more assessment is needed before waste from pulp mill operations can be removed.
Sopkin says they need to first determine the extent of the problems and contamination locations before moving forward with a feasibility study.
Missoula County Commissioner Dave Strohmaier says officials want the remediation and reclamation work done quickly, but they would rather sacrifice expediency than quality.
