ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) _ Andrei Chesnokov made a disappointing return following leg surgery, losing to Jeans Knippschild on Wednesday at the St. Petersburg Open.

Knippschild easily won 6-1, 6-3 in Chesnokov's first tournament since an old leg injury was repaired in in August. Chesnokov blamed his weakened leg for his failure to return Knippschild's steadily strong serves.

``I'm 33, but I like tennis. And I don't feel a desire to leave tennis,'' Chesnokov said after the game.

In another match, Igor Kornienko upset Marc-Kevin Goellner 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 and advanced to the second round.
