Hospital being built to withstand strong hurricanes
NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) — A new Massachusetts hospital is being built in preparation for the worst weather.
The Cape Cod Times reports the 106,000-square-foot Nantucket Cottage Hospital is being built to hurricane design specifications from Florida.
The code will allow the hospital to withstand winds as strong as 185 mph (297 kph), rather than 150 mph (241 kph) specified in Massachusetts building codes.
Massive concrete footings and a double-hulled exterior building shell are part of those efforts.
The 14-bed hospital is slated to open by the end of the year.
