MONROE, La. (AP) — The University of Louisiana at Monroe has named assistant coach Jessica Thornton its interim head softball coach.

Athletics director Nick Floyd, in an announcement Wednesday, said Thornton assumes the position effective immediately.

Thornton joined Louisiana-Monroe's program in 2016 and Floyd says she will provide the necessary leadership and stability for the program. Thornton replaces Corey Lyon, who resigned this week to accept a position at Marshall University.

Over the past three seasons, Thornton has instructed the outfielders and base runners. She also developed and implemented a pitch-calling system and was responsible for organizing softball operations, developing practice plans, overseeing travel logistics and coordinating recruiting initiatives.

Floyd did not indicate when a permanent coach would be named.
