U.S. Beats Slovenia at World Juniors
THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) _ Michigan State forward Paul Davis scored 20 points Saturday, leading the United States past Slovenia 77-72 in the playoffs at the World Junior Basketball Championships.
Australia, behind Andrew Bogut’s 39 points, downed Croatia 97-84 to reach the final.
The Aussies will play Lithuania in the championship. Linas Kleiza scored a game-high 27 points as Lithuania beat Greece 75-72.
The Americans will play Puerto Rico for fifth place Sunday. Puerto Rico beat Turkey 85-78. The best Slovenia can finish is seventh.
The United States went ahead for good on two 3-pointers by Illinois guard Daniel Brown in the last four minutes. Brown scored 17 points and Slovenia’s Sasa Zagorac had 26.
In lower-tier playoff games, Angola downed China 85-73 to finish 13th while China was 14th. Malaysia beat Iran 77-67 for 15th place. Iran was last in the 16-team tournament.
The tournament was moved to Greece from Malaysia because of fears of SARS.
