Rahlves Wins Super-G at NorAm
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. (AP) _ Daron Rahlves, the top-ranked super-G skier in the United States, won a NorAm super-G on Tuesday by almost a second over American teammate Ehlias Louis.
Rahlves, who was seventh in his specialty in the recent Olympic Winter Games at Nagano, Japan, negotiated the 1 1/4-mile course Rendezvous Mountain course in 1 minute, 25.07 seconds. Louis finished in 1:25.97, .29 faster than third-place Darin McBeath of Canada.
Eighty-six racers started but only 44 finished, an unusually high dropout rate for a speed event.
Among those failing to finish was 1994 Olympic downhill champion Tommy Moe of Jackson. He crashed about midway through the run and was rewarded with a cut and bruise alongside his right eye.
The super-G kicked off a nine-day racing schedule headlined by the U.S. Alpine national championships. After training sessions Wednesday and Thursday, NorAm and International Ski Federation downhills for men and women are scheduled Friday and the nationals downhills for men and women on Saturday.
