One Killed in Israeli Missile Strike
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) _ An Israeli helicopter gunship on Tuesday fired a missile at a car in Gaza City, killing one Palestinian and wounding six, witnesses said.
It was not immediately clear why Israel targeted the car, which was parked outside a bodyshop. Witnesses said two Palestinian gunmen were walking nearby at the time.
Israel has carried out scores of targeted missile attacks on militants and their leaders. The car, which was destroyed, was hit in the Shajaiyeh district of Gaza City, near the area of intense fighting between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen.
A bloodied shoe and shirt remained at the scene after the wounded people were evacuated. A crowd gathered around the wreckage, looking through the shattered windshield at a bloodied seat and mangled metal.
On March 22, Hamas founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin was killed in an Israeli missile strike. Less than a month later, Yassin’s successor, Abdel Aziz Rantisi, was killed in a similar attack.
The latest airstrike occurred just hours after Palestinians blew up an Israeli armored vehicle, killing six soldiers, during fierce fighting in the Gaza Strip.
The car targeted Tuesday was driving in the direction of the Zeitoun neighborhood, where troops and gunmen have been battling for hours.
