Alexander calls for Kavanaugh accuser testimony, panel vote

September 20, 2018

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee says he hopes the woman accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault will appear before a committee next week. But he’s stressing that her story concerns a “disputed event from high school 35 years ago,” and after time, “memories fade.”

In Thursday’s statement, Alexander says Kavanaugh’s committee confirmation vote should follow Christine Blasey Ford’s opportunity to testify publicly or privately Monday. It’s still unclear whether she’ll testify.

Alexander said there’s been ample opportunity to learn about Kavanaugh through six FBI background checks, previous appellate judge confirmation and committee work.

He added that “after a time memories fade, witnesses disappear and people sometimes simply get things flat wrong.”

Alexander said it’s “even more troubling” Democrats knew of the allegations for weeks before bringing them up.
