Dave’s Cosmic Subs and Music to move into Barking Spider Tavern space

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Dave’s Cosmic Subs and Music is scheduled to open on the campus of Case Western Reserve University this year.

It’s going into the former Barking Spider Tavern space, a former early-1900s carriage house in University Circle. It will be founder Dave Lombardy’s first location with live music, he said in a release.

(Previous coverage: Barking Spider closed in 2016 after 30 years.)

“It’s a wonderful location,” Lombardy said. “It’s going to be a really cool spot.”

Dave’s Cosmic Subs are in close to two dozen places throughout the country. Most are in Northeast Ohio. Lombardy opened his first Dave’s Cosmic Subs in Chagrin Falls in 1997.

Franchisee North Coast Cosmic Subs LLC signed a long-term lease for the university-owned building at 11310 Juniper Road, a spokesman for the university said.

It’s a busy area, with Wade Oval, retail development and university property all off Euclid Avenue. Dave’s Cosmic Subs and Music will be between the Coffee House and Zack Bruell’s fine-dining restaurant, L’Albatros. It’s half a mile from The Jolly Scholar, the independently owned brewpub and brewery on Case’s campus.

Interior demolition has begun to “renovate, restore and refresh” the space, said Paul Sidhu, president of North Coast Cosmic Subs, in a release. North Coast Cosmic Subs also owns Dave’s Cosmic Subs franchises in Berea, Mentor and Oberlin and co-owns a shop in Cleveland Heights with business partner Danny Clark. Sidhu and Clark will own the University Circle location.

Trivia nights, sports-themed events, karaoke, open-mic and poetry nights also are planned, and Sidhu said he hopes to feature rotating seasonal menu items and local craft beers.
