Two Charged For Abandoning Dog In Covington Twp. Shopping Plaza
Covington Twp. police charged two brothers for abandoning a Chihuahua in a township shopping plaza earlier this month, officers said.
Kerry Vernon McCoy, 48, 34 W. High St., Coaldale, and Michael Charles McCoy, 47, 204 Raymondskill Road, Milford, are each charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, Cpl. Jeremy Kenosky wrote in a criminal complaint.
On Aug. 13, police were called to the ShopRite plaza on the Daleville Highway and discovered the dog in a plastic basket near the store’s pharmacy.
Surveillance cameras captured the two men and an unidentified woman pull up to the grocery store in a Dodge Durango at 9:30 a.m. The cameras then record them removing the dog from the back of the vehicle, placing the animal in a basket and then placing putting the basket on the ground.
The cameras also picked up the Dodge’s license plate number, which registered to Kerry McCoy.
In the video, described in an affidavit, Kerry McCoy tries to cover a portion of the license plate. When Michael McCoy looks over at a video camera and chats with him, Kerry McCoy decides against covering the plate.
Finally, the Dodge drove away. The dog appeared to get out of the basket because the video showed the dog running out into traffic, nearly getting run over by the Dodge as it left.
The McCoy brothers each have preliminary hearings scheduled 10:15 a.m. Sept. 26. It’s unclear if either have bail set.
The dog, meanwhile, is safe and living with another family, Kenosky said.
