Correction: Chicago Violence-Baby Killed story
CHICAGO (AP) — In a March 18 story about the killing of a 6-month-old Chicago girl, The Associated Press misspelled the names of the city’s police superintendent and the girl’s father. The superintendent’s name is Garry McCarthy, not Gary McCarthy, and the girl’s father’s name is Jonathan Watkins, not Jonathon Watkins.

Chicago police superintendent says arrests are likely in shooting death of 6-month-old child
CHICAGO (AP) — A 6-month-old girl killed in Chicago last week was sitting in her father’s lap when a gunman opened fire on their minivan, not getting her diaper changed, as was previously reported, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Monday.
Jonylah Watkins was sitting on Jonathan Watkins’ lap in the driver’s seat when their attacker approached and began firing, wounding them both, McCarthy said. Jonylah, who died after undergoing surgery for extensive internal injuries, was shot once, not five times, as a family spokesman had said.
McCarthy also said the girl’s mother was not shot while she was pregnant with Jonylah, as the woman’s mother had reported.
Jonathan Watkins, 28, survived with serious injuries.
“We are going to close this case, there’s no doubt in my mind,” said McCarthy.
Jonathan Watkins has an extensive criminal record, and McCarthy has said Watkins belongs to a gang. He is cooperating with police in the investigation into last week’s attack, the police superintendent said.
“At this point there’s a lot more he can help us with, but (he) is cooperating with the investigation,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy has said police have surveillance video that shows the van they believe was the getaway vehicle. And he said investigators were trying to verify the existence of an alleged Facebook post threatening Watkins.
Services for Jonylah were to be held Tuesday at a church in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side where the shooting occurred. A local funeral home is paying for the services.
