WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) — Police say they're talking to a driver who believes a tire that killed a man on a Long Island highway flew off of his vehicle.

Suffolk County police said Saturday that Joseph Nickel came forward after noticing a tire missing from a trailer he was towing around the time of Thursday's crash on Sunrise Highway in West Babylon.

Police say 60-year-old David Dorazio died after losing control of his Saturn and hitting the median when a tire bounded into the westbound lanes and struck the vehicle.

The tire also struck an SUV. The driver and her passenger were not hurt.

Police say they've impounded Nickel's Ford F-350 and Ringo trailer for a safety check. They say the 48-year-old is cooperating with the investigation.

A message at a number listed for Nickel wasn't immediately returned.
