No. 9 Ala. 93, Northwestern St. 65
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) _ Dominique Canty had 25 points and nine rebounds as No. 9 Alabama overcame a shaky start for a 93-65 victory over Northwestern State in the opener for both Friday night.
The Crimson Tide outscored Northwestern State 60-32 in the second half after the teams went into halftime tied at 33-33.
Alabama limited the Lady Demons to just 8-of-34 shooting after halftime and 1-of-15 from 3-point range on the night.
The victory was the 200th of Tide coach Rick Moody’s career.
Kaunda Williams added 16 points for Alabama while Shondra Johnson had 15 and Joni Crenshaw 12. Johnson scored 13 points in the second half.
Canty, a senior All-American, made all but one of her 12 free throws, and had four assists and two blocked shots.
Northwestern State got 17 points from Louise Chase, 12 from Judy Clark and 10 from Jamila Newman.
Alabama held Sonya Bearden, the leading scorer last season for the Lady Demons to five points, nine below her 1997-98 average.
