ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A new 136,000-square-foot expo center has opened at the New York state fairgrounds.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo cut the ribbon the facility Wednesday, the first day of the 2018 Great New York State Fair.

The expo center is intended to house not just fair exhibits but also future trade shows and conventions. It's part of a larger renovation at the fairgrounds that will include upgraded attractions and better parking.

Cuomo said the expo center will help lure visitors to the fairgrounds throughout the year — and allow the fair to expand to record size.

The fair runs through Sept. 3 in Syracuse.
