BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (AP) — Police have shot and killed a New Jersey man while responding to a domestic violence call.

Authorities were responding to a call in Bloomfield when they encountered a woman with stab wounds and say they were confronted by 60-year-old Leroy Frank, who was armed with a knife.

Police say Frank had stabbed the woman, his estranged wife.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino says officers were attempting to disarm Frank when he lunged at them with the knife.

Bloomfield Director of Public Safety Samuel Demaio says one officer fired two shots and hit Frank. Both Frank and his 54-year-old wife were rushed to a hospital.

Frank died from his wounds. His wife is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The county prosecutor's office is investigating the shooting.
