TRUMBULL, Conn. (AP) — Police in Connecticut say an 18-year-old who forced his way into his neighbor's home was shot in the stomach.

Trumbull Police Capt. Keith Golding says the teenager forced his way into his 72-year-old neighbor's home late Thursday night. Golding says the teenager charged at the homeowner and a struggle ensued.

Police say the homeowner shot the teen in the stomach with a legally owned handgun. Responding officers treated the teenager at the scene before transporting him to an area hospital.

Golding says the teenager was later identified as a nearby resident who suffers from a "mental health disability." Police say he may have been affected by the severe weather going on at the time.

The man who fired the gun cooperated with police. No charges have been filed.
