FRIEDENS, Pa. (AP) _ Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani will likely speak at the graduation ceremony of the high school nearest the Sept. 11 crash site of United Airlines Flight 93.
Shanksville-Stonycreek School Superintendent Gary Singel said Tuesday that Giuliani will attend the May 31 ceremony. A formal announcement is expected the week of the ceremony.
Shanksville-Stonycreek High School’s 36-member graduating class wrote to Giuliani because of the leadership role he played after the terrorist attacks.
Flight 93 crashed about 85 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, killing all 44 aboard. Authorities believe passengers overpowered the hijackers, causing the plane to crash just a few miles from the school.
Singel didn’t know graduating seniors had contacted Giuliani about speaking at the commencement until the staff at the former mayor’s consulting firm contacted Singel in March to see if he approved of the invitation.
