MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's finance minister says Ukraine has violated the terms of a $3 billion bond issue and that Moscow could demand early repayment.

If Russia presses the demand, it could add significantly to the Ukrainian economy's struggles as the country's crisis extends into a second year.

The bond was purchased by Russia in December 2013 as the first step in a financial aid package aimed at propping up the government of then-President Viktor Yanukovych. But Yanukovych fled last February in the wake of large and increasingly violent protests and Russia abandoned the rest of the aid package.

Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said Saturday that Ukraine violated the bond's terms by allowing state debt to exceed 60 percent of gross domestic product, Russian news agencies reported.
