Song by Sen. Hatch in “Rat Race”

August 19, 2001

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Add ``movie soundtrack songwriter″ to Sen. Orrin Hatch’s resume.

A song written by the Republican senator and Utah resident Janice Kapp Perry can be heard in the background toward the end of the movie ``Rat Race,″ which opened Friday in theaters nationwide.

``It tickles me to death,″ Hatch said.

But ``Rat Race″ producer/director Jerry Zucker may also have decided to use Hatch’s song as a way to say thanks for the senator’s stand in favor of federal funding for research on embryonic stem cells.

Zucker has a daughter who suffers from juvenile diabetes, and he has been advocating stem cell research as a possible cure for this disease.

The senator described his song, ``America Rocks,″ as a ``patriotic rock song for children.″ He wrote the lyrics and Perry wrote the music.

Hatch has written numerous gospel and love songs and released several compact discs containing his music.
