Hotel Chain Eliminating One-Third of Headquarters Staff
BOSTON (AP) _ Sheraton Corp. will eliminate 90 of the 270 positions at its headquarters here in a corporate restructuring move, according to an official of the hotel chain.
Some of the positions are vacant, but up to 50 people will be laid off and 25 will be transferred to regional offices, Sheraton spokeswoman Dianne Duffin said Thursday.
She said the reduction should be completed within a month.
″Sheraton is moving more toward being a management company and away from a hotel owership company, and so our headquarters staffing needs have changed,″ she said. ″The competitive pressures of the marketplace have forced a need for cost reduction.″
Sheraton owns or manages 503 hotels in 62 countries, including 380 in the United States and Canada. It owns outright only 10 of the hotels, while the rest are either partially owned, franchised or only managed by Sheraton, Ms. Duffin said.
Sheraton employs about 100,000 people worldwide.
