August 14, 2000

SEATTLE (AP) _ Seven people were arrested in an alleged scheme to smuggle 240 pounds of highly potent marijuana into the United States using Canadian military trucks.

The five Canadian men and an American man and woman made initial appearances in federal court here Monday, facing preliminary charges of conspiracy to import and distribute marijuana. A detention hearing will likely be held Thursday, and the government will probably seek indictments this week, authorities said.

The Customs Service said the drug seized was a particularly potent form of marijuana known as ``B.C. Bud.″

The British Columbia-grown marijuana wholesales for as much as $3,300 per pound on the West Coast and as much as $5,000 per pound on the East Coast, the agency said.

Two men were arrested Saturday on entering the United States at Blaine in two Canadian military trucks. The five others were taken into custody soon after.
