PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — The U.S. men’s hockey team has been shut out by the Russians 4-0 as the teams wrapped up pool play at the Olympics. U.S. goaltender Ryan Zapolski allowed four goals on 26 shots, including two goals by Ilya Kovalchuk (EEL’-yah KOH’-vul-chook) less than 33 seconds apart at the end of the second period and start of the third. With the loss, the United States is guaranteed to have to play in the qualification round on Tuesday.
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — The U.S. women’s hockey team will face Finland in the Olympic semifinals, after the Finns routed Sweden 7-2 in the quarterfinals. Monday’s game will be a rematch of the opener, which the Americans won 3-1. The Olympic athletes from Russia will play Canada in the other women’s semifinal.
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu has made Olympic figure skating history with his gold-medal performance in the men’s free skate. He became the first man to repeat as Olympic champion since Dick Button in 1952. He also won the 1,000th gold medal in Winter Games history. Japan’s Shoma Uno won silver and Spain’s Javier Fernandez took bronze.
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — Ester Ledecka has pulled off a surprise win in the women’s super-G, stunning everyone including herself. The 22-year-old Czech was a low-ranked competitor who was considered a better contender for a medal in snowboarding. But she sped down the course in 1 minute, 21.11 seconds, 0.01 seconds faster than defending Olympic champion Anna Veith of Austria. American star Lindsey Vonn tied for sixth.
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — Defending champion Kamil Stoch has won gold in ski jumping’s large hill. The 30-year-old from Poland had leaps of 135 and 136.5 meters for 285.7 points to beat normal hill gold medalist Andreas Wellinger of Germany, who took the silver. Robert Johansson of Norway won the bronze. Stoch earlier finished fourth in the normal hill.
