There are 350 drive-in theaters left in the country, and the Monetta Drive-In Theater, called “The Big Mo” by locals, was recently named one of the best.
“Architectural Digest” recently released a list of its top 25 Most Charming Drive-In Movie Theaters in America. Two theaters from South Carolina made the list; 25 Drive-In located in Greenwood, and the Monetta Drive-in Theater.
“We are thrilled to be recognized as one of the most charming drive-ins in America,” the Monetta Drive-In Theater said in a statement via Facebook Messenger. “We have tried to keep as much of the 1951 charm as possible while adding retro touches like the neon and whimsical touches like the giant peach.”
The Big Mo features three screens, each playing two films that guests can come to watch. The movies start around 9 p.m. and play Friday through Sunday. The gates open around 7 p.m. on most nights, but may open sooner if there is a big crowd. Screenings include a mix of kids shows, popular blockbusters and maturely rated films.
The theater is unique in that it offers trivia games on the main field during the intermission period. They also give a shout-out to guests celebrating birthdays on the big screen.
According to the drive-in’s website, large crowds can be expected on the weekends, especially during holidays, so guests are advised to arrive early.
