2 authors and urologist get honorary degrees at Millsaps
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two authors and a urologist are receiving honorary degrees from Millsaps College.
The Jackson institution is awarding the degrees Saturday to Jon Meacham, Jesmyn Ward and Dr. Lamar Weems at its commencement.
Meacham is a presidential biographer who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for his book about Andrew Jackson. He’s also written books about Thomas Jefferson, George Bush, and the relationship between Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.
Ward is the only woman to have won the National Book Award twice, first for the novel “Salvage the Bones” in 2011 and then for the novel “Sing, Unburied, Sing” in 2017.
Weems is a 1953 Millsaps graduate who became the first full-time urologist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He’s a longtime advocate of better health care for uninsured Mississippians.
