Capture an icy Lake Erie in the RocktheLake winter photo contest

CLEVELAND, Ohio – In winter, Lake Erie is transformed.

The water freezes solid, changing from an expanse of blue to white. The sound of surf is replaced by silence. And familiar shapes – benches, piers and lighthouses – become other-wordly ice sculptures.

It’s far from a warm summer sunset. But beauty abound in a winter beach.

And cleveland.com’s RocktheLake is celebrating that beauty with our first Winter Beach Photo Contest. Submissions are due Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Bundle up and get creative. Think ice fishing, ice boating, ice dunes and ice shoves. A pink sky of sunrise over a lighthouse. Icicles on driftwood. A drone shot of a shoreline.

Last summer, Aprell Burkey won our first annual Sumer Solstice Sunset Photo Contest, with a stunner of a freighter at sunset in Fairport Harbor.

The contest garnered more than 100 entries. Burkey, the head server at Fairport Harbor Bar & Grille, received nearly a quarter of the 1,000 votes cast among 25 top photos selected by RocktheLake.

See all the entries here.
