New water billing system faces challenges

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont city converting to a new water billing system is facing challenges.

The Rutland Herald reports the company overseeing Rutland’s conversion to a smart meter system accidentally sent out test bills that were never meant to be mailed.

FATHOM Water Services vice president Brad Dreier said Tuesday the company is investigating how the incorrect bills were sent out.

Dreir says he is confident this kind of mistake will not happen again.

The company says anyone who has received a bill with a date of Oct. 1 and a due date of Sept. should ignore it.

Public Works Commissioner Jeffrey Wennberg says the error has shaken his confidence in the company “quite significantly.”

But Wennberg says he still believes moving forward with FATHOM will ultimately be in Rutland’s best interest.
