Journalist invited to appear at Brazil Congress
BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Brazilian congressmen will invite the American journalist who has published documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden to appear before the Foreign Relations and Defense Committee of the lower house Chamber of Deputies.
Committee president Nelson Pellegrino says he will extend the invitation to Glenn Greenwald on Wednesday.
The invitation comes after British authorities on Sunday detained David Miranda, Greenwald’s partner, as he arrived at Heathrow Airport in London. Miranda, who is in a civil union with Greenwald, arrived Monday in Rio de Janeiro, where he lives with the journalist.
London police detained Miranda under anti-terror legislation.
Greenwald, who reports for the Guardian newspaper in Britain, promised he was going “to write much more aggressively than before” about government snooping.
