Boil-water advisory issued after water main break
HUNTINGTON — West Virginia American Water issued a precautionary boil-water advisory for homes near 12th Avenue in Huntington on Wednesday following a water main break.
A resident said her water service shut off without warning at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Service was expected to be restored by Wednesday night, according to the company.
Customers living along 12th Avenue, from 10th Street to 12th Street, including those in the Mortimer Place Historic District, were advised to boil water until further notice. This includes water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, bathing and food preparation, according to the advisory. Customers are encouraged to boil water for a minimum of one minute to kill bacteria and other organisms that may be present in the water. Utility crews will take water quality samples in the area near the outage to determine when to lift the advisory.
Michelle Yates, who lives in the outage area, said she saw water crews checking out a fire hydrant on the corner of 11th Street and 12th Avenue on Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, Yates said she was getting ready to throw a load of laundry in the washing machine when her daughter noticed the water was shut off. Yates said she didn’t receive advance warning of the outage and neither did her neighbors. Some of her neighbors were in the middle of a shower when the water went out, she said.
She questioned why customers weren’t notified of the outage if crews were aware of the problematic water main as early as Monday.
Laura Martin, external affairs manager at West Virginia American Water, said she was checking to see how customers were notified when reached by phone Wednesday morning. She did not return a follow-up call Wednesday evening.
Anyone seeking more information about the advisory, including whether it has been lifted, may call West Virginia American Water’s customer service center at 800-685-8660.
