MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) _ A van careened into a tree in the median of Interstate 20 in eastern Mississippi today, killing seven people and injuring three others.

Five men and two women died in the crash, coroner Marl Cobler said.

He said the van had a Texas license plate, but that authorities were told some of the passengers had been picked up in Virginia and Georgia.

The injured were taken to hospitals, where at least one was in critical condition.

The Highway Patrol said it did not know the cause of the wreck, which happened about 6:15 a.m. The weather was clear.
