COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) _ A Maryland man was charged with murdering his two young daughters after police found the girls dead at his home over the weekend.
Robert E. Filippi, 43, was accused in the deaths of Lindsey A. Filippi, 2, and Nicole E. Filippi, 4.
At a relative’s request, police had gone to Filippi’s home Sunday at about 11:30 p.m. to check on the girls and found them in an ``unresponsive″ state in a bedroom in his home. The sisters were later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The cause of death wasn’t immediately known; autopsies were to be performed Monday.
Filippi, who was at home when police arrived, was treated at a hospital for ``an unknown medical condition″ and then taken to the county’s police station in Laurel, authorities said.
Neighbor Bradley Arnold said Monday that Filippi was a Washington banker who was going through a divorce and had custody of the children. Arnold said he spoke to Filippi on Sunday.
``I was speaking with him last night, and he seemed to be in good spirits. He certainly wasn’t remorseful about anything, his kids were with him, they were in a good mood. I just have a hard time understanding,″ Arnold said.
Filippi moved to the neighborhood about three years ago, said Arnold.
``His children were everything to him, he loved his kids, took excellent care of them. They were well behaved, full of life, absolutely wonderful children. It’s a terrible tragedy,″ he said.
