MILAN, Italy (AP) - RAI, Italy’s state-owned television network, canceled live broadcasts of a boxing match and a marathon because the athletes are candidates in next month’s parliamentary elections.
RAI canceled Francesco Damiani’s 10-round victory Saturday night over Frankie Swindell and Sunday’s marathon run by Gelindo Bordin in Monza.
Damiani is running on the Republican ticket and Bordin is running for the Socialists. They are part of a trend in which parties seek celebrities outside politics.
Giovanni Salvi, deputy general director of RAI, said Monday that mentioning the athletes’ names during the sports broadcast would give them electoral publicity.
It was unclear how the policy will affect the Davis Cup match between Brazil and Italy at the end of March. Paolo Cane of the Italian team is running for parliament as a Socialist.
