August 22, 2018

A large fire raged for hours Tuesday after multiple explosions ripped through a saltwater disposal site an hour southeast of San Antonio.

No injuries were reported at the facility in the 11000 block of Farm to Market Road 99 after a fire in one of the tank batteries caught fire, exploding and spreading fire to the rest of the site, said Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward.

The fire started around 12:19 p.m.There were no evacuations.

“One of (the tank batteries) exploded for reasons unknown right now and then it caught other tank batteries on fire and caused multiple explosions at the site,” Soward said.

Soward said at least four fire departments responded to the blaze, but firefighters might have left the fire alone to burn off some of the material.

Live video from KXAN around 4:54 p.m. showed smoke and some fire continuing to pour out from the tank batteries.
