Peter Lucas: Free Stuff for Everyone! Wait, What? Our Taxes Our Going Up?
What do you mean by free, Bernie? Do you mean that nobody pays?
Do you mean that you as president will abolish college tuition and that everybody will attend at no cost?
That is what you have been saying, so I guess you mean it.
But if everything is free where will the money come from to pay the professors, or the college presidents or the janitors? Or will they all be volunteers and work for nothing?
Would UMass President Marty Meehan have to forfeit his $582,077 (and rising) salary and work for free? Would students be allowed to live rent free in those high-rise Boston University apartments with the spectacular views along the scenic Charles River?
Tuition and board at Boston University, by the way, is up to $73,000 a year. Is that going to be free, too?
If so, maybe U.S. senators like you should also volunteer and work without pay, instead of becoming rich, as you have become, despite never having had a real job. Instead you’ve lived off the taxpayer for a lifetime. But that’s what good socialist leaders do. They feed off others.
When you look at it, the only politician in the U.S. government who is working for nothing is President Donald Trump. He donates his $400,000 salary to what he considers worthy causes. Maybe you should do the same, since you have become wealthy with obscene book advances and now own three homes.
What you should be saying -- but do not -- is that you would tax the hell out of people, the rich and not-so-rich -- as well as the average American family to pay for your dishonest pipe dream.
But if you did, your cheering free stuff college supporters would vanish like snow in spring.
For what they teach in college these days, if you can buy your way in -- as U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling has revealed -- you might be better off learning to become a plumber.
If colleges taught anything of value, they would be teaching how Bernie-like socialism has brought only misery to countries, from Albania to Zimbabwe. And you can throw in poor Venezuela, where people are starving and dying in the streets.
What is disturbing is that other Democrat presidential candidates are not only mimicking Bernie but are going even further to the left of the Vermont senator. They are out-socializing the Socialist.
The Democrat Party has become so crazy and leftist that it is foreign to the people it once represented.
The party appears ready for some reasonable, adult candidate to come along and give it a dope slap.
That candidate just might be U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, 40, of Salem, a U.S. Marine Corps Iraq combat veteran who, should he run for president, might bring some moderate and common- sense leadership to the campaign and to the party.
He has not announced. The three-term Congressman from the 6th District would be a longshot for sure. Right now, all the Democrats running are longshots.
But Moulton is the only candidate who has seen combat during his four tours of duty in Iraq. As such, he is the only candidate with the military standing to call President Trump a draft dodger for getting several deferments to avoid serving in the military during the Vietnam War.
(Moulton has already called the president that, in addition to comparing him to Hitler.)
Moulton has spent a lot of time campaigning for veterans who ran for Congress in 2018 and has built up something of a network of support. He has visited New Hampshire and planned to test the political waters in other early primary voting states like South Carolina and Nevada.
Moulton, in addition to his military experience, is a graduate of Harvard with a master’s degree in business. He worked in the private sector for the Texas Central Railway and then co-founded eastern Healthcare Partners, which closed when Moulton first ran for Congress in 2014.
Like a good Democrat, Mouton is for same-sex marriage, legalized marijuana, abortion rights and gun control.
Politically, he has nowhere to go. He not only burned his bridges with Nancy Pelosi when he opposed her as House minority leader, but he returned to blow them up when he campaigned against her for speaker.
Moulton could not beat Pelosi, but maybe he can beat some sense into the others. The Democrats could do worse, and they probably will.
