Albion man pleads guilty to killing girl

An Albion man has pleaded guilty to killing a 21/2-year-old girl in November.

Trevor L. Wert, 42, beat Railee Ewing to death after she woke him up by turning on a bathtub faucet Nov. 1, according to court documents. He struck the toddler in the head and face several times and kicked her in the buttocks, causing her to slam into a door frame, investigators said.

Noble County Prosecutor Eric Blackman said at the time the case was among the most brutal that investigators had ever seen.

Wert, who had been baby-sitting Railee in his home, pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday in Noble Superior Court. He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 31.

The girl and other children went trick-or-treating with Wert on Oct. 31, according to court documents, and he returned with them to his home on Railroad Street. Railee’s mother called police the next morning, saying she had picked up the girl from Wert’s home, the documents said.

The mother told police that the girl fell and hit her face on the bathtub after getting up in the middle of the night. There was blood on the bathroom floor, she said.

Railee was limp when her mother placed her in a car seat to take her to the hospital. Doctors pronounced the girl dead at 7:47 a.m., about 20 minutes after her mother called 911.

The child’s body had injuries consistent with physical and sexual abuse, according to court documents, and Wert also faced a charge of child molesting. Court records show he pleaded guilty only to the murder charge.

Wert faces up to 65 years in prison.
