Authorities: Man broke into police cars, stole equipment
CRANFORD, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a man broke into several police cars parked at a northern New Jersey municipal complex, stealing bulletproof vests and other gear on two occasions.
Cranford police say Jake Fichiera faces multiple counts of criminal mischief, burglary and theft. It wasn’t known Tuesday if the 19-year-old township resident has retained an attorney.
Authorities say Fichiera allegedly smashed the rear windows of six police vehicles on July 28 at the town’s municipal complex. He allegedly stole a police jacket, rummaged through police equipment kept in the trunk and removed a gun vault that was bolted to the vehicle.
As investigators identified Fichiera through video surveillance, authorities say he struck again Friday at the municipal parking lot. He allegedly stole three bulletproof vests, an entry tool kit and a police gear bag.
