Safety board approves suspending 4 officers
The Fort Wayne Board of Public Safety approved Thursday the suspensions of four city police officers.
The board also approved the next proposed class of firefighters and the use of four police dogs.
Detectives Okey Sharp and Scott Tegtmeyer were suspended, Sharp for four days for social networking and improper conduct and Tegtmeyer one day for an unauthorized absence.
Officers Grant Sanders and Greg Stier were each suspended one day, Sanders for alertness on duty and Stier for an unauthorized absence.
Fort Wayne Fire Chief Eric Lahey received approval for 25 new recruits who will be members of the 91st Recruit class. Training for the new firefighters is expected to begin in February, Lahey said.
Last week, 19 firefighters were sworn in, bringing the number of firefighters to 358.
New service dog team graduates include Rizzo, in the custody of K-9 handler and Officer Mark Brown; Iskra, with Officer Matthew Harmeyer, Kaine with Officer Gregory Woods and Lobo, Officer Jason Fuhrman.
In a closed session, the board heard the appeal of Officer Ted Butz, who was recommended for termination by Police Chief Steve Reed because he used intoxicants while on duty.
Board members said it would likely take a couple months before a final decision is made.
