Bossier City water tests negative for brain-eating amoeba

February 5, 2019

BOSSIER CITY, La. (AP) — Officials say water samples in a Louisiana city have tested negative for a brain-eating amoeba after they tested positive in October.

News outlets cite a Monday statement from Bossier City as saying that the latest samples tested negative for both Naegleria fowleri and the amoeba’s DNA. The state Health Department collected the samples Jan. 23.

The website of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says an infection from Naegleria fowleri typically occurs when people go swimming in warm freshwater places like lakes and rivers. People get infected when water contaminated with the amoeba enters the nose, not from drinking.

Bossier City says it’ll continue to use a newer water treatment facility. It’s also made changes including the installation of 22 automatic flushing units on fire hydrants for older water.
