Darlington firefighters, police officers step up for Christmas
DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Darlington firefighters and police officers Saturday morning made Christmas a bit merrier for area children as they distributed toys purchased as part of their toy drive.
The annual event, conducted at Darlington First Baptist Church, has been going on for almost 30 years.
The program started almost 30 years ago when a Darlington family lost their home to a fire on Christmas Eve morning. Volunteer firefighter Johnny Deas said, in a 2016 Morning News story, a request was sent to a local radio station asking for Christmas present donations.
“By the afternoon Christmas Eve, we had to tell everybody to stop,” Deas, said. “We had all we could take in; the community just came together.”
