HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox have set their rosters for their AL Division Series beginning today. The Astros are leaving off three veteran pitchers and the Red Sox including infielder Eduardo Nunez. Both teams are carrying 11 pitchers and 14 position players on their rosters.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians All-Star Michael Brantley is on Cleveland’s AL Division Series roster after it appeared his season might end because of an ankle ligament injury. Brantley missed 50 games after Aug. 8 when he got hurt but worked his way back and is expected to be used in a pinch-hitting role against the New York Yankees.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Blue Jackets will open the new season Friday with a new superstar, some impressive rookies and a familiar player in a new position. The Blue Jackets hope winger Artemi Panarin will be the elite sniper needed to reach the next level. Versatile captain Nick Foligno has been moved from wing to center. Rookies Pierre-Luc Dubois and Sonny Milano have made the roster.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes have gone from having no captain last season to having two — forward Jordan Staal and defenseman Justin Faulk. Coach Bill Peters said today that Staal will begin the season as the captain at home while Faulk will fill that role on the road, and they will switch at midseason.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Dannon, the maker of Oikos yogurt, is cutting ties with spokesman Cam Newton. The company cites what it says were “sexist” comments the Carolina quarterback made to a female reporter. Newton said it was “funny” to hear the reporter ask about wide receiver Devin Funchess’ route running.
